Renewable Energy

Energy obtained from sources that are essentially inexhaustible and naturally replenished, unlike, for example, the fossil fuels, of which there is a finite supply. Renewable sources of energy include wood, waste, geothermal, wind, photovoltaic, and solar thermal energy.

Ground Source Heat Pumps

A geothermal heat pump or ground source heat pump (GSHP) is a central heating and/or cooling system that pumps heat to or from the ground. It uses the earth as a source of heat (in the winter), or as source of cold (in the summer). The setup costs of installing a geothermal heat pump are higher than a conventional system, but the difference is usually returned in energy savings between 3 to 10 years. System life is estimated at 25 years for inside components and 50+ years for the ground loop.

The three most common forms of heat extraction are through a Ground Probe (Borehole)
Ground Loop (also known as Ground Coil or Slinky) and Ground Water System (using either a borehole or river). Schematics of these three installations are shown below
